Archaic Tagalog words that are still used

    These archaic words are still used by the old folks particularly in the rural areas. However, the are still understood by some elders in the urban areas.

    Kabihasnan means civilization like city of town proper
    Lunas is cure or remedy
    Huminahon is to keep calm
    Umiibig is in love

    Pinsel is paint brush
    Brotsa is brush
    Toothbrush is sepilyo a Spanish word
    Aligaga is in panic
    Arimonan or Harimonan is trying to save even some cents
    Hiwaga or kahiwagaan is mystery or mysterious
    Larawan for picture but more common is litrato

    Salumpuwit for chair although upuan or silya are also common
    Agahan is breakfast but almusal is more commonly used
    Dayuhan means stranger but istranghero is more common
    North is hilaga, South is timog while East is silangan and West is kanluran. However, the English term is more commonly used in the urban areas.

    Piging is party or gathering for an occasion
    Sinagtala is starlight
    Bahag-hari is rainbow
    Bulalakaw is meteorite or falling star
    Alipato is ember but more for flying ember
    Himpapawid means sky but a more common term is langit
    Salipawpaw for airplane or jet plane

    Sumakabilang–buhay means one had died
    Alibugha is a prodigal child who committed a big mistake
    Kalihim is secretary
    Pelikula is movie or film
    Yeso or tisa for chalk
    Pisara is blackboard
    Naninimdim is sad or lonely
    Basag-ulo is violent quarrel
    Bigkas is to pronounce

    Anluwagi is carpenter but karpintero is more common
    Wagi or Tagumpay is win or victory
    Mangmang is ignorant but more common is ignorante
    Dalubhasa is specialist
    Pingkian is conflict or violent encounter
    Hapag means the dining table while the ordinary table is called mesa

    Abaniko is the fan and Guni-guni is imagination. The popular word Katipunan is not really being used which means organization. More common is grupo or tropa. Samakatuwid is the counterpart of therefore or ergo. Mabalam is delayed and lunan is place. Tibobos is a description of a person who is pure or naive.

    Some more old words that are only used by the old folks are Panibugho for jealousy, Katipan for lover and Salawahan for unfaithful lover. Kalaguyo is the lover of the Salawahan that is usually a relationship in secret. Humaling is addicted but more Lulong is the better description of an addict because Humaling is more for the lovers.

    Another mixture of archaic Tagalog words are Kaserola which is the pot or casserole, Baldosa that is the tiled flooring, Dibuho is the design while Pluma is simply the pen whether it is ball pen or fountain pen. Kubyertos is the cutlery but specifically referring to the spoon and fork.

    Some more archaic Tagalog words are related to romance like Marikit which means attractively beautiful, Dalisay is pure and Magiting as noble. Siphayo is painful frustration, Nagkabula means failed to materialize and Magpatanto which means to realize.

    Mind descriptions have archaic words like sapantaha which means to speculate and hinuha or pakiwari which is an anticipation. The colors green is Luntian and violet is Lila are seldom heard now. Arok is to feel that is idiomatic which really means to fathom

    Some objects are better called in English like Tabak which was used during the time of Jose Rizal, so to speak much more with Sundang. They both mean bolo. The razor is already a common Tagalog word since Labaha is only used in barbershops. The small knife was formerly called Lanseta is now called kutsilyo the same as the regular knife.

    Many verbs and adjectives are not known to the youth now like Busilak which means glowing and Alumpihit which means uncomfortably undecided. Sukab is a scum or evil person with sinister motive while Balatkayo is disguise or costume which is only used in the song with the same title.

    Some old words that you can come across an old Tagalog novel are Kalupi which is a kind of wallet and Tampipi which is a small suitcase. Sumbalilo is a hat and the sumbrero from Spanish speakers is more common. Kalasag is the shield usually referring to the warrior’s armor while Kalatas is a missive or an official message.

    For a description of a person, Busabos is a pauper while Tampalasan is a traitor. Bugok is actually an unhatched egg but its another meaning is a person who is dumb while May Ulo means intelligent. Ale is woman that is still being used today while Mama with the accent on the last syllable means a man.

    You may be shocked to hear Pulot-Gata that was popular before I was born. It means honeymoon. Some simple words that have passed to oblivion are Baro that gave way to the more common Damit and Banyaga which is the local term for foreigner that is not used anymore in favor of Dayuhan or foreigner too.

    For the emotional words, Agam-agam is anxiety that is usually felt for something big that is to happen. Hungkag is an empty feeling while Luwalhati is relief or contentment depending on the usage. Maaliwalas means bright but it can also describe the appearance not only of a place or structure but also the face of a person that shows happiness.

    Who knows Kudyapi? It is a musical instrument that was popular in the olden times. For some words to describe emotion, Balintataw was known only because of the TV show with the same title. Mapanglaw means sad while Luningning is the old word for brightness that is used to describe a happy person.

    Pusikit is the word for dusk which means darkness is setting but prior to that period is the Dapit-hapon which is a little earlier than dusk. Bukang-Liwayway is the opposite of that which means sunrise. Perhaps it is still common to hear Hatinggabi which literally means the night is cut in half which is the midnight hour.

    You may be surprised that Aklat is the Tagalog for book but Libro, which is Spanish, is the most commonly used. Dahop means financially strapped while Budhi is conscience. Creature of creation is Nilalang that commonly refer to humans. A dimple is Biloy which is a rare words nowadays.
