During the Christmas season, there are carolers that would knock on your door. They will sing carols and you have to give them something in return like money or candies. If you have children, they can also experience doing that. All they need is to know a Christmas song and that’s it.

Even in high end villages, there are carolers at night. This is one tradition that we are happy about and we also give to the carolers for encouragement. I know that there are countries where carolers are also part of their tradition. But in our country, Christmas will not be complete without the caroling.

It is nice to see the adults in formal attire with instruments like the guitar to sing carols. Usually they give a notification or they ask permission from the house owner that they will go on caroling on a specific date and time. When accepted, it is expected that the house owner will give a substantial amount to the carolers.

I remember my classmates who go on caroling. They have organized themselves as a glee club in school and they carol on the houses of our rich classmates. The money they earn is spent on a new year party in our classroom that is like a belated Christmas party. It is nice that caroling is still alive in some schools.

It is just sad that the caroling is being used by some people for begging. Streets are now full of children waiting for the traffic lights to turn red so they can carol on the stopped vehicles. It is a dangerous adventure for those kids and the street cops seemed not to be concerned with such caper. Maybe they are still waiting for an accident to happen.

Truly caroling is almost everywhere in the country. When you enter a big supermarket, expect a group of carolers singing near the entrance area. The do their regular caroling there to get donations from the shoppers. Maybe they have a connection with the supermarket since every year they are there during the holiday season.

The official end of caroling is on December 24th but some wise carolers are still doing that activity until New Year’s eve. But in our home, carolers receive the loot bags on the 24th and they all know that it is the end of the Christmas caroling. We take pictures of the carolers for our record so we can truly feel how many kids we made happy.

Over here there are still carolers in the streets even after Christmas because what they sing now are not Christmas carols but more for the new year song. The sad part is that the public is giving them money so the carolers remain in the street which can endanger their lives when there is a wayward vehicle.
