English words with no Tagalog translation

    There are English words that are mostly new with no Tagalog translation. And even if there is the people are not really using the translation. Computer is also computer no matter what translation they say. Technology is sometimes teknolohiya which only few are using because technology is understandable.

    Science is agham or sensiya in Tagalog but the translations are not really being used and mostly the word science is understood by the majority. Botany as a science has no translation likewise with other sciences like medical, agriculture and entomology. Animal husbandry has no translation either.

    With the abode, house is bahay and home is tahanan but bungalow has no translation likewise with condominium which is simply called condo. Automatic is also understood largely by the population and that also goes with the word appliance or appliances where there is no translation.

    Engineer is inhinyero but Engineering has no translation although Structure is sometimes called Istraktura which is clearly a borrowed word. Ball pen is commonly used maybe because there is no Tagalog word for that. Elevator is also called the same likewise with escalator which has no translation. Perhaps you can add the walkalator which is like a moving conveyor belt.

    Most sports have no Tagalog names like golf, basketball, football, volleyball, softball, tennis, badminton. Some other sports are bowling and weightlifting. Boxing is boksing and billiards is bilyar. Chess is ahedres although it is an archaic term that chess is more common. Billiards

    Most appliances have no Tagalog translations like microwave, toaster, air conditioner, television, refrigerator although some call it pridyider from the brand Frigidaire. Although oven is called pugon in the olden times but does not refer to the electric or gas oven and only for the clay oven is the pugon. Electric fan is bentilador from the word ventilator (not sure if Spanish or English).

    Modern objects like cellphone has no Tagalog name although the telephone is commonly called telepono which refers to the landline phone. Camera is also camera and the tripod is also the same. More likely there is no Tagalog for things that are associated with the phone like the SD card for storage.

    Some jobs that have no Tagalog translations are Astronaut, Announcer and Beautician but Manicurist can also be added. For the tools, hammer has the martilyo but not the Screw Driver and the Pliers although plais is a trying-hard translation of pliers.

    Some food items that remain in the English form only are the popular foreign foods like Spaghetti, Macaroni, Hotdog, Spam or Meat Loaf, Pizza. Add to that the Tomato Sauce and probably Corn Starch to make a complete kitchen array.

    Some other English words that failed to land a translation are Insecticide and the accompanying Spray or Sprayer. For the men’s and women’s wear, Briefs, Bra, Panty also have not translation but are all understandable. And for the food, there is no Tagalog for Cake, Pudding and even Pastry and other bakery products but rest assured that they are all understandable by the common people.

    For personal use, shampoo is commonly called the same just like toothpaste which has a funny translation as Colgate. Napkin or tissue paper have no translation. The bathroom shower has no translation although in some provinces it is called Dutsa.

    For some occupation that have no Tagalog word translation are operator of any kind, technician of any kind, accountant, waiter, electrician and scientist in general. The pharmacist is called the same including the postman although in some areas the postman is called Kartero.

    In the gym, there is the barbell that you lift for building muscles is barbel which sounds the same. The dumbbell likewise is also dambel. But the treadmill has no translation that the English name is used. The gym or gymnasium also has no Tagalog translation.

    Some of the jobs and occupation that have no translation in Tagalog are hairdresser, librarian, surveyor, operator and veterinarian. The military ranks of major and colonel are also the same although the colonel is sometimes referred to as Koronel. The private or corporal is called Kabo.

    For the musical part, piano is also called Piano just like Keyboard is the same while organ has a trying hard translation of organo although Organ is still the most common. There is no Tagalog word for amplifier stereo, and speaker and they are called by their English names.

    Some other English words that are used and understood since there are no Tagalog translation are what you can see in the home like cabinet or dresser, drawer (of the table), doorbell, and door knob. The toilet bowl is the same although some call it kubeta which actually means toilet. Understandably bidet is a French word that has no translation.

    Reading materials usually are called the same names as in English. Comics is Komiks which vary only in spelling just like magazine which is magasin. Journal or diary have no translation especially with encyclopedia and almanac. Atlas which is a book of map is also called the same.

    In the marine world, there are many terms that have no Tagalog translation. The fishes Tuna, Marlin, Barracuda and Tilapia are called the same that includes the Manta ray, Sting ray and Starfish. The Jelly Fish is called Dikya in coastal towns but it is generally called Jelly Fish.

    Some other terms used in sports have no Tagalog translations are basketball court and tennis court that includes the basketball ring. Net in general has no local name while baseball bat is called the same. Helmet and wrist band of players are commonly called the same as if no one had bothered to think of a local name.

    One word that was a contention in a tv show was the Tagalog word for Casino. That can stir your mind but it is not Pasugalan because it means a place for gambling but not necessarily a Casino. The Casino is understood so that means the English term is accepted.
