In school, teachers say that superstitions were brought here by the Spaniards but some others say the Chinese gave it to us. And maybe there is also the American influence since the black cat crossing your path is also in our culture that includes the broken mirror that would bring you bad luck.

When a single girl is singing while cooking then she may not be able to get married. There is no clear explanation but in the rural areas, single girls are forbidden to sing in the kitchen. Another superstition is the open umbrella inside the home that a centipede will fall on the umbrella since you are like mimicking the rain.

When there is death in the family, there are so many superstitions behind it. First is the placing of the coffin when the wake is at home. It should not be near the entrance. Cleaning the house is done only when there are no visitors to the wake. The food served in the wake should not be brought home by the visitors.

If the wake is held in the funeral parlor or church, the cleaning should not be done by any family member. When the visitor leaves, the family member should not see the visitor out, just let the visitor leave by himself. It is also a superstition for the family member of the deceased to take a bath only for the funeral which means no bathing during the wake.

When there is a shower and the sun is still up, it is said that there is something phenomenal going on. You should not let the shower get you wet for you might get sick and healing would take a long time. That is because there are supernatural beings getting married with that kind of weather.

Business people have many superstitions like the so called “buena mano” which means the first sale of the day. The money paid would be held and shaken like a fan to ventilate the other products so it will attract buyers. And before placing the money in the pocket or money box, the seller smiles first for the positive vibrations.

Another superstition in business is the handling of the money for payment or change. Use the right hand when taking in money and use the left hand for the outgoing money. It is like the Feng Shui but we cannot blame the business people for their superstition regarding the money.

The red color is a lucky color for business as per the advice of the Chinese. But the store need not be colored red. Just a curtain or maybe a small hanging banner will do. During weekends, vendors in the market would wear red shirt as a way of following the lucky red color in their superstition.

One movie producer believes so much in the color red for the clothes. Whenever she would hold a meeting for a movie, she requires all the attendees to wear a red top. She is fondly called Mother Lily, a Chinese-Filipino who is one of the biggest movie producers in the country.

In sleeping, old folks would say you should not eat during bedtime for it can make the devil get you. But there is some truth to that because sleeping on a full stomach can give you indigestion and therefore lead to a nightmare. Just to be sure, the young people observe that superstition for their own good.

Sleeping with someone face to face is bad because the souls may be interchanged. It may be a silly superstition but scientifically it is not really good to sleep in that position since the exhaled air can be inhaled by the other and vice versa. We need fresh air to inhale so it is not good to be sleeping in a face to face position.

Praying before sleeping is actually not a superstition but old folks say that if you do not pray at bedtime, the devil or bad spirits would be lurking at you and waiting to enter your dream. That is the reason why sometimes you have a nightmare when the bad spirit was able to enter your dream.

Upon waking up, it is said that we should remain lying on the bed with eyes closed to let the good spirits leave us otherwise it will give you a headache when you hurriedly rise from the bed. The scientific explanation is related to vertigo so that superstition of spending some more time in the bed upon waking has a basis.

In the Filipino culture for the wedding, fitting the wedding gown is not allowed for it can cause the cancellation of the wedding. Although that superstition has no solid basis at all but brides follow the rule not to wear the wedding gown in advance just to be safe.

The bride and groom are both advised to wear something old like socks for the groom and probably underwear or bra for the bride. It is not clear why this superstition came to fore but old folks say that the old things will give a semblance of a better relationship not only to the couple but also to their families.

During the wedding ceremony, the groom should be very careful in handling the ring and also the arras that are usually old coins. When the ring drops or the coins fall on the fall, it is not a good sign for their marriage. I have attended a wedding ceremony where the ring fell but I guess it has nothing to do with the married life.

One superstition with the wedding that is still strictly being followed by couples who will be married is the Sukob which means siblings get married in the same year. That is not good for the siblings because their life will be competing with each other. Old folks are always against the Sukob of siblings getting married in the same year.
