Aside from the ghost which is a universal character, the most famous is the Asuwang which is the counterpart of the werewolf. But the Asuwang not only sips blood like a vampire but also eats the liver and heart of the victim. The Asuwang is a person that transform into a hideous character with fangs just like Dracula.

The Manananggal is a kin of the Asuwang but its peculiarity is the body that is cut in half. The lower part is left in the home while the upper part instantly develops wings that it will fly around in search of a victim. The Manananggal only comes out at night and spies on the roof of the houses. It is very scary to the children when told of stories about the manananggal.

The Kantanod is another scary character in the folklore but not really the appearance. The Kantanod is the maker of a doppelganger which means it will mimic your appearance so people will mistake the Kantanod to be you. I think the Kantanod is an original character in the Philippine folklore which has no counterpart in the foreign culture.

The Kapre is believed to be a slender giant who is always smoking a cigar up a tree. At night, rural folks advise not to look up when walking under a tree for the ashes of the Kapre’s cigar might fall on your eyes that you will go blind. Generally the Kapre does not harm people but just scare them with the big booming voice and the roaring laughter.

If you are fond of the zodiac sign then the Tikbalang is similar to the symbol of Sagittarius which is half man and half horse. But the Tikbalang is more of a horse that has powers to kill people. The only thing that can defeat the Tikbalang is by getting its golden hair which is hidden in its mane. When you get that golden hair then you will be the master of the Tikbalang.

The Tiktik is a bird but some say that it has the image of a small Manananggal or like a devilish angel. The Tiktik creates a sound that is similar to its name tik-tik-tik when it is on the roof and peeking inside. In the rural areas in the olden times, thatched roofing is common so it is really scary at night. The scariest part of the Tiktik is the long and narrow tongue that will penetrate the roof and sip what’s inside the tummy of the sleeping pregnant woman.

Duwende is the elf or gnome. There are several kinds of Duwende, one is the good Duwende that helps people and the other is the black Duwende that is bad. They say that the small Duwende can talk to people that it chooses and that person is lucky because the Duwende can give the chosen person riches. So the Duwende can be likened to the Troll that is a caretaker of treasure.

Regarding the Duwende, there was a judge who was removed from office when he admitted that he was consulting the Duwende when making decisions on cases. Can you imagine the stupidity of that judge who studied law for a long time, had passed the bar and became a judge only to believe in the dwarf? He lost his job but we really don’t know if what he was saying about the dwarf is true.

Tiyanak is another small creature that has a hideous appearance. Long hair can be curly or dangling with dark face an small fangs and big round eyes. The general description of the Tiyanak is similar to the size of a toddler. It’s main purpose is to scare people out of their wits and they don’t really do bodily harm.

The Diwata is the counterpart of fairy. It is said that usually the Diwata is a beautiful lass that attracts men. We had a neighbor named Virgilio who was smitten by a Diwata purportedly living in our camias tree. Virgilio started acting strange that he had wanted to join the Diwata in the ether world. Fortunately an Albularyo treated Virgilio although the Diwata remained in our tree.

Old folks say that to determine if the person is a real human, check if he has a shadow. Shady characters do not possess a shadow. Another indication is the small canal in the middle of the upper lip just below the nose. If it is flat then that is not human. And for good measure, offer salt to the character. If he could eat salt then he is human.

Still on the Duwende, another believer is the former press secretary of a Philippine president. When he retired from office, he claims to be communicating with the Duwendes. He even wrote accounts of his communications with complete description of the dwarfs as either white or black. That the white dwarf is the good and the black is the bad dwarf. His accounts were published in Liwayway magazine in the 1980s.

The counterpart of the mermaid and merman are the Sirena and Siyokoy which have a big part in the Philippine folklore. A movie with the title Dyesebel was a hit in the cinema and has even several versions. With the Siyokoy, it has a bad image that it is more of a villain than a hero.

The Diwata is the lady fairy and the counterpart is the Tamawo which is supposed to be a handsome fairy that captures the heart of single girls. Usually the single girl has a homely look that the Tamawo would take fancy to make her happy. But in the end the girl will be gone to live with the Tamawo in his own world in a different dimension.

The Engkanto is literally translated as enchanted or enchanting but Engkanto is a general term to mean something that cannot be explained. People say that “na-engkanto ako” or may “engkanto dyan” a place that is mysterious. There is no clear description of the Engkanto’s image.

The Maligno is an indescribable being but some say that it is a black creature like a shadow with eyes hence it would be too scary to see them in the dark. The harm that a Maligno can do is to enchant you with that hideous appearance that would haunt you in your sleep. Children are scared of such stories just with the mention of the black color.

The Santelmo is actually from the term Saint Elmo’s fire. Yes, it is a ball of fire that is moving like a small space ship with a fixed and varied direction. Old folks say that the Santelmo is the guardian of a treasure so if you will follow it you may find the buried treasure. But no one had found it yet.

The Tamawo is a male handsome fairy that is the contemporary of the Diwata. The usual appearance of the Tamawo is when it is dusk and the girl or woman is alone. Not a harmful character and not scary either such that the girl would be attracted. But falling in love with a Tamawo is not good for the girl will vanish when she is brought to the kingdom of the Tamawo.

The Maligno is very similar to the Engkanto with a dark hideous image. But unlike the Engkanto that is quite playful, the Maligno is like a destructive poltergeist that can ruin things inside the home. Harming people is not the specialty of the Maligno but they can do that if they are offended.
