The albularyo was actually the herbalist or herbolario who uses home remedies and herbs to treat sickness. Called quack doctor, by some, the albularyo is the only recourse of the sick when there is no doctor in the area. Later on the albularyo expanded its jurisdiction from home remedies using herbs to faith healing just like the witch doctors in Africa.

It may be surprising to some that until now there are Albularyos doing their healing sessions in the rural areas. The cured patients are the living testimony of the efficacy of the treatment, from the simple rheumatism up to cancer. It is hard to believe although there are proof about the healing by the presence of x-ray and ct scan results of before and after the Albularyo treatment.

One weird Albularyo uses pen and paper to treat his patients. After the interview about the sickness, the Albularly would write on a small piece of paper something- it is a prayer in Latin. After chanting on the paper, the Albularyo will place the paper on the forehead or on the back of the patient. That is the treatment which is unbelievable even amidst the testimonies of the healed patients.

The one good thing in the practice of the Albularyo is the traditional use of herbs and plants. The leaves of the Banaba tree and the sambong plants are good for patients with kidney stones for they were proven effective. The Lagundi leaves for fever, colds, and flu are also proven. There is also the cleansing of body toxins by drinking tea made from from leaves that include yellow ginger or turmeric.

There are 2 modern day Albularyo that I used to know. One is named Ernie and the other is Johnny. They are both against fatty foods and meat. Ernie even has his cleansing diet of boiled leaves. Unfortunately Ernie died of diabetes even before reaching 60 years old. So what is the point of all his health advices?

Johnny, for his part, advises against eating salty food and also against fried rice. But take note that Johnny is overweight so he doesn’t touch the subject of obesity. Johnny died of heart attack and I think he was not even 70 yet. It is really sad that an Albularyo could not show concrete proof of what he is preaching.
